Fire Marshal (AHJ) Training for Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Services / Codes

Fire Marshals are extremely busy and have any fire codes to enforce, so they look to the industry professionals to understand and uphold the codes. 

Many fire marshals see us as partners in the fire prevention efforts. We agree with this sentiment and look to support Fire Marshals, Fire Inspectors, and the complete Fire Department in any way we possibly can. 

So, how do we support the Fire Marshals? 

Education

The first line of defense for fire mitigation in kitchen exhaust cleaning is education. We at Bare Metal Standard provide free training seminars to fire departments and fire marshal conference whenever possible. 

The education we provide is on the services and codes that regulate our industry: National Fire Protection Association, Standard 96. This Standard is used to set the minimum requirement for the construction, fire suppression, and grease removal of kitchen exhaust systems.

As experts in the industry, we feel a responsibility to provide this education to fire departments and other industry experts.

Our education focuses on the current state of the industry, NFPA 96 codes, best practices in reporting, enforcing codes, and how the relationship between vendor / fire department / customer can be leveraged to increase fire safety. 

This education of the kitchen exhaust cleaning industry encompasses a lot as there are many issues that plague this fire safety service:

  • Lack of standardized Certification / Training
  • Codes that allow portions of the system to NOT be cleaned: NFPA 96 Code 11.6.14
  • Customers misconception on this service (out of sight, out of mind)
  • Poor adoption and urgency of deficiency resolution 
  • Standardized enforcement for Fire Departments – the code is vauge regarding what the fire department expects from a hood cleaning vendor:
    • The NFPA 96 Code states multiple times that services must be completed by …trained, authorized, and certified person(s) acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction…” 
    • The problem with this code is that there are no standardized methods for training, certification, and authorization.

While we do not have solutions for every problem, we do see a clear path to a better future and it starts with communication.
